As the next generation enters the workforce, a 2024 study from Jewish Federations of North America’s Changemakers initiative finds that young Jewish professionals are looking for more than just competitive salaries, but meaningful, purpose driven careers. The findings emphasize young Jewish professionals are seeking opportunities for professional growth and workplaces that reflect their Jewish values. The findings provide new insights for employers to better recruit, develop and retain the next generation of Jewish leaders. 

 

The study surveyed more than 700 Jewish professionals between the ages of 22 - 30, to better understand how Gen Z approaches work, leadership, and Jewish life. Conducted through the Changemakers initiative, the research explores the values, motivations, and workplace experiences of the next generation. 

 

The report found that ⅔ of respondents are satisfied with their current careers, but are actively investing in their future. 91% said they are looking to build new skills, mentor relationships, flexibility and meaningful work. At the same time, Jewish identity remains central to how many respondents view their careers and leadership aspirations. 

 

Among the report’s key findings: 

• 91% of respondents said they are actively seeking opportunities to develop new professional skills 
• 92% identified communication as an essential workplace skills, followed by 90% problem solving, 83% leadership, and 82% collaboration 
• 89% said combatting antisemitism is an important cause, while 78% said Jewish values play an important role in their professional lives.
• 72% identified mentorship as important to their career growth, emphasizing the value Gen Z places on guidance and leadership development 
• 40% rated their organization’s inclusivity regarding religious and cultural identity as average or below, highlighting opportunities for employers to better support Jewish employees

 

The findings reinforce Jewish Federations’ commitment to strengthening the Jewish communal workforce by investing in leadership development, professional growth, and talent retention. Through the Changemakers initiative and other workforce development efforts, Jewish Federations is helping organizations build workplaces that reflect core Jewish values and aspirations of the next generation of Jewish professionals.
